With Saturday Night Live having just begun its 41st season earlier this month, it appears Colin Jost has stepped down as head writer of the sketch comedy series.

Spiltsider reported Tuesday that Jost will instead focus primarily on his duties as co-anchor of SNL's "Weekend Update" alongside Michael Che.

NBC has subsequently confirmed Jost's transition technically occurred at the start of the season, although an announcement hadn't been made. He will still maintain a role as part of the show's writing staff, although not as prominently as before.

Jost follows the likes of Seth Meyers and Tina Fey, both of whom worked their way up the writing ranks to head writer and eventually anchoring "Weekend Update."

The "Update" segment was criticized last season for a lack of chemistry between Jost and Che, among other issues.
