As the latest chapter in the ongoing evolution of music streaming, and specifically the music industry's relationship with Soundcloud, Sony Music has pulled music by a number of its artists from the platform.

According to Billboard, original material from the likes of Adele, Hozier, Passion Pit, Leon Bridges, MS MR and Miguel has been removed from Soundcloud, with a Sony executive citing “a lack of monetization opportunities” as the reason for withholding its artists' music.

Soundcloud, which remains free for listeners with the option of upgrading to "Pro" tiers, rolled out an ad-supported version of the service last year. It has reportedly reached an agreement with Warner Music Group, but its negotiations with the third and largest major record company, Universal Music Group, remains in question.
