Just days before Fear the Walking Dead airs the second episode of its second season, AMC has renewed the show for a third season consisting of 16 episodes.

“What Dave Erickson and Robert Kirkman have invented in Fear The Walking Dead is to be applauded,” AMC Studios president Charlie Collier said in a statement released Friday afternoon. “Watching Los Angeles crumble through the eyes of our characters and seeing each make decisions and try to figure out the rules of their new world – it’s fresh, eerie and compelling and we’re all in for the ride.”

The Walking Dead prequel series has maintained its ratings from its season finale last fall. It's currently the second-highest rated cable series in the coveted 18-49 demo, behind only the original show.

The second season of Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays 9 p.m. EST. Its third season will start in 2017.
