Spotify Accuses Apple of Rejecting App Update to Thwart Competition

Spotify is accusing Apple of foul play, suggesting the company rejected its latest app update because the music streaming service isn't funneling payments through Apple's own billing system.

Recode first reported Spotify earlier this week filed a formal complaint with Apple and has even submitted a letter with members of Congress, claiming the tech giant is merely trying to fend off competition for its streaming platform Apple Music.

As we previously reported, Apple Music unveiled a major resign earlier this month, taking direct aim at Spotify's music discovery strengths as the latter has surpassed 100 million active users, with 30 million paying subscribers compared to Apple's 15 million.

Apple currently charges app publishers 30% of subscription costs when purchased through Apple directly. Thus, Spotify is directing iPhone users to its website to upgrade to the $10 monthly plan.

The news comes a day after Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren delivered a speech specifically targeting Apple (and Apple Music), Google and Amazon, as virtual monopolies trying to "snuff out competition" with platforms that much smaller companies "depend on for survival."

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while Spotify has declined to comment further.
