Multiple arrests were made Sunday night in East Rutherford, N.J., as police say a number of music fans tried unsuccessfully to break into Hot 97's sold-out Summer Jam concert at MetLife Stadium.

While attendees inside enjoyed performances from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj, chaos outside led to what some described as a "barbaric" atmosphere in which police armed in riot gear used tear gas on the crowd.

At one point, the stadium was placed on lockdown due to the struggle, resulting in many paid concertgoers missing out on the chance to enter and enjoy the show, according to the local ABC affiliate.

A statement released Sunday night by New Jersey State Police says "security personnel at one of the entrance gates to MetLife Stadium were confronted by crowds attempting to illegally enter the sold out Summer Jam concert by climbing over fences and forcing their way through security personnel."

At press time, an exact number of arrests had not yet been made available. Hot 97 said Sunday night that "refunds will be offered at point of purchase" for any tickets left unscanned.
