After renewing a number of its shows over the past few weeks, Fox on Tuesday added its veteran comedy New Girl to the slate of returning series.

Noting the show's "bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” Fox president David Madden explained the network's decision to order a sixth season of the show.

“The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was," Madden said in a statement released this afternoon. "We want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”

New Girl's current fifth season was affected early on by star Zooey Deschanel's maternity leave, which prompted a January premiere and led to Megan Fox's five-episode stint on the show during her absence.

Season six would likely follow a more familiar format, although Fox has not yet revealed whether the show will premiere in the fall, as it had in previous seasons.
