After releasing her debut album Note to Self, singer-songwriter Bre Kennedy is releasing an acoustic Note to Self EP on Friday, which includes five stripped-back versions of songs from the 2021 album.

Kennedy chatted with Variance during SXSW in Austin, the Nashville-based artist's debut at the festival, which was making its return after a two-year in-person hiatus due to the pandemic.

Speaking about her recent album, Kennedy talked with us about the songwriting process and sincerely facing the "trauma" which inspired some of her music, specifically her song "Thick Skin," which is included on the new acoustic EP as well as the album.

“I wrote Note to Self in the thick of quarantine," says Kennedy. "And it helped me heal and navigate my self-growth through 2020. This acoustic EP honors coming of age, growing pains and celebrates seeing our friends again, letting go of what we can't control, and the best and worst parts of ourselves.”

Kennedy is currently on tour with Joy Oladokun, with the trek ending next month in Nashville. The following month, Kennedy will make her debut at Bonnaroo, which is also making a comeback after two years off, one due to the pandemic and last year because of severe flooding on the festival grounds.
