Because in 2013 a viral parody video—of which you had nothing to do with—can send your send your song to the top of the charts, Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" has returned to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100.
While Lorde's "Royals" was already positioned to hand over the No. 1 crown after nine weeks, it had previously seemed Eminem & Rihanna's "The Monster" would be claiming the top spot this week. Then YouTube comedian Stephen Kardynal posted his lip-syncing video and changed the game.
Kardynal's video features Cyrus' original audio, but the comedian is lip-syncing the song in awkward positions while random users watch him live on Chatroulette's video chat service.
Interestingly, "Ball" only sold 99,000 copies of the MP3, according to Nielsen SoundScan, compared to 231,000 for "Monster." Of the 18.6 million U.S. streams, a mere 24% were from the official YouTube video for "Ball," while 67% are from other YouTube views, including Kardynal's clip.

It's not the first time a viral video completely out of an artist's control has affected its chart ranking. The first week Billboard introduced its new YouTube-influenced formula earlier this year, Baauer's "Harlem Shake" reached No. 1 based almost exclusively on videos created by YouTube users.
Also, despite high download counts for "Monster," it wasn't even the most-downloaded song of the week. That honor goes to Pitbull and Ke$ha, for their curious collaboration "Timber," with 237,000 downloads. New low for America.
