Courtney Barnett performing at the Sylvee, by Dan DeSlover

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett brought her signature blend of sharp lyricism, fuzzy guitar tones and effortless charm to The Sylvee on May 15, delivering a set that balanced introspective moments with bursts of noisy, cathartic energy.

Touring behind her recently announced album Creature of Habit, Barnett moved seamlessly through fan favorites and newer material, keeping the Madison crowd locked in from start to finish.

Opening the evening was Truman Sinclair, whose warm, understated set provided the perfect lead-in before Barnett and her band took the stage. From jangly riffs to sprawling instrumental breakdowns, the performance highlighted why Barnett remains one of indie rock’s most compelling live acts, blending humor, vulnerability and controlled chaos into every song.
